Barry L. Saunders has been named as the sole suspect in the weekends' Southcenter mall shootings that left one dead and one injured.
Saunders, 21, is apparently affiliated with a couple of local gangs, including the notorious 8 Block, a mix of Central District and South Seattle gangs. The two teenagers Saunders shot were apparently associated with 74 Hoovers, a South Seattle gang.
Saunders and a friend apparently got involved in a fistfight with the two teens when Saunders fired his gun into the two boys, killing one and wounding the other. He is still at large and his bail has been set at $1 million.
Police are encouraging anyone with information on Saunders' whereabouts to contact them, as there is a serious concern of street retribution.
This case is just another in a recent string of gang-related violence in the area. Until the local law enforcement agencies do something, like re-create the King County Gang Unit that helped mostly eradicate gangs during the late '80's and early 90's, these kind of instances will only continue to rise. And if something isn't done quickly, we'll be past the point of control before you know it.
