Father was drinking when daughter was shot

November 17, 11:02 PM

Richard D. Peters, the man who was arrested after accidentally shooting his six-year old daughter while he was cleaning guns, was drinking double vodkas while cleaning his guns.

Stormy Peters, 6, was shot in the head by a .45-caliber pistol on Sunday night.  Her father told authorities that he was "probably too drunk to drive" when the gun he was preparing to clean discharged in his hands and struck his daughter in the head, killing her.

I immediately felt like there was more to this story than a tragic accident and now it's been confirmed.  A young girl has lost her life because of a mistake made by her father.

Peters told police that he has been handling guns since he was seven and that all of his children, two others 8 and 3 were not harmed, had all handled guns.  Apparently his comfort with guns led him to make a poor decision, one that has robbed he and his wife of their daughter.

From all accounts, Peters, who is being held on $250,000 bail, was distraught after the incident.

When sheriff's deputies arrived at the family's home, Peters was sitting out front with a neighbor, uttering that he had "just killed his little girl." Deputies noted that he made statements about "harming himself."

This story is nowhere near from over, as authorities have not revealed how many weapons they removed from the house and Peters and his wife gave conflicting reports about the events leading up to his daughter being shot.  Peters told police that he had asked his daughter to retrieve his gun and that it went off after he had removed the magazine.  His wife told police that she had retrieved the gun and that it had gone off when Peters pulled the slide back.

It may be awhile before everything about this case is known.  For now, all we know is that one father made a poor choice that turned into a tragic accident.
