Back to Part 1.

Here’s the rest of my Q&A with Phill Kilgore, owner of TableTop Game & Hobby:

William: Tabletop Game & Hobby offers a lot of different kinds of games, from board games to miniatures. Which ones are the most popular? Which games are your personal favorite?

Phill: Our inventory lines are so extensive this is difficult to answer.

Miniature Games, Board Games, and Role Playing Games comprise our three largest departments. Each department has its consistent best sellers. Games Workshop and the Warhammer family of games are our best selling miniature games. Rio Grande and Mayfair board games do extremely well, with Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, and Ticket to Ride being the bestselling titles. Dungeon and Dragons is the king of the role playing marketplace.

When people ask me what my favorite games are, it is a most difficult question, as I love them all! When I have time to play the games I want to rather than run instructional demonstrations, here are my games of choice: Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Flames of War miniature games, Bohnanza and Agricola board games, and Dungeons and Dragons or Rogue Trader in the role playing department.

William: You have a lot of beautifully painted miniatures in your store and you offer a class on miniature painting. Who teaches the class and how often is it taught?

Phill: Formal paint classes are held January to March on Saturdays, but the best instruction is usually had in more informal affairs. We have a dedicated painting area in our game room, and encourage folks to come in, use the space, and ask questions of the experienced painters that frequent us. When people need instruction, I usually try and help them in a 1 on 1 setting or link them up with an experienced hobbyist to get individual instruction. Most of the best techniques for painting are quite simple, and people are always surprised at how quickly they can improve their skills. Our most helpful painters are Josh Howard, Bryan Bledsoe, Mark Duncan and Michell Farnsworth, though our skilled and friendly painters are legion.

William: Tabletop Game & Hobby has a side room that’s used for games being played there at the store. Can people reserve that room for their own games?

Phill: Our game space hosts regular gaming clubs Monday thru Thursday. Weekends are the time we host most of our tournaments and special events. Customers can use the space at no cost as long as it doesn't conflict with scheduled events. Special reservations are handled on a case by case basis.

William: Will you have a table at the Kansas City Game Fair in November?

Phill: Sadly, we won't be able to attend the Game Fair in November due to a staffing issue. I hope the Game Fair does well and we will certainly try and have a presence at the next show!
