The talk radio circuit and is crackling with opinions that the FBI and military officials were more concerned about political correctness while investigating Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan prior to the shooting rampage he is suspected of conducting at Ft. Hood. What do the facts show?
Hasan, a native born American and radicalized Muslim, came to the attention of intelligence officials and the FBI in Dec. 2008. At that time he had made several attempts to contact, via e-mail, a alleged terrorism promoter, Anwar al-Awlaki. Awlaki, 38, served as an Imam at a the Dar al Hijrah mosque in Falls Church, Va., where Hasan attended to prayers. (See Awlaki vidoe "fighting is good for you")
Awlaki is reportedly the same Iman who administered to 9-11 hijackers, Nawaf al Hamzi and Hani Honjour before their attacks on 9-11. (See slide show below).
Awlaki is an American born, radicalized Muslim, who earned a degree in civil engineering from Colorado State University and a master's in educational leadership from San Diego State University.
Awlaki left the U.S. to take up residence in Yemen, the home country of Osama Bin Laden, after the 9-11 attacks.
Awlaki frequently promoted violent jihad against the United States in Virginia and now on his online blog from Yemen. He was under surveillance by the U.S. when it was discovered the Hasan sent nearly 20 e-mails to Awlaki dubbed as “research” into Muslim attitudes and serving in a war zone fighting Muslims.
FBI investigators determined that Hasan’s e-mails were confined strictly to research he was conducting in his role as a Army psychiatrist. He was deemed not to be a threat to the U.S.
During his time in Washington and Virginia, Hasan reportedly made disturbing comments and presentation showing sympathy for violent jihad. Several of his fellow soldiers and physicians complained to Army officers that Hasan was demonstrating disturbing sympathetic tendencies
toward the enemy.
Whatever steps the FBI and the Army took to question or investigate Hasan in light of these accusation has not been revealed. A full investigation has been ordered by President Barack Obama and the Congress.
Was the FBI and the Army more concerned about political correctness than a proper investigation into Hasan? So far the known facts do not indicate any favoritism shown to Hasan. He was more likely converted to violent jihad rather than a sleeper cell waiting to attack the U.S., an undetected by American intelligence agencies.
