You probably feel that your blog is just a blog and the purpose of it is to talk and entertain your audience and maybe even put in a link or two of your other writing or money ventures, but have you really thought about what more you can bring to your blog?
First get over the idea that your blog has to be all about you. Unless you can grab an audience exclusively because of your writing talent or your ability to give them something they need every day, your readers may forget about you.
Keep in mind that not every blog entry has to be about your life and how you told your sister that her husband was no good for her after getting inspired by watching a Dr. Phil show nor does it have to be about your opinion of what is happening to Steve Jobs. We talked about branding and you should have your direction all figured out, from reading my article, How to Grow your Blog Audience by Branding. So, the next step will be easy.
Begin by generating a feeling of giving to your audience. The next time you blog along, don't forget there is two sides to a conversation. Welcome your reader to argue with you by putting in sentences, such as, "Do you agree with me?" Write as though you are talking with someone and pause every now and then and ask for their feedback.
Make your reader think while you are writing. Ask them questions throughout your blog such as, " Do you think that will work or what would you think would work better?" and give them questions they have to think about before you give them the answer, like "Did you think about your cup of coffee this morning? As I was making mine this morning I began to realize that Starbuck's probably is closing the store up the road from me because I stopped going there. Did you know that you can save at least $20.00 a week by making your own...."
Start reading other people's blogs and when you find one that you enjoy, then contact them and let them know. Ask if you can quote then and put in a link to their blog. You not only have widen your audience you have gained more readers when the other person's readers come to look at how they were quoted. Keep in mind your branding, you don't want a quote from a childcare worker in your car blog.
As your audience grows, create a newsletter listing your topics for the month and send it to your subscribers so they can be reminded of you. I myself forget to go back to people's blogs and appreciate a reminder from someone I subscribe to. It never is a wasted trip to their blog, as I pick up ideas and feel thankful they let me know.
Remind your readers that they can subscribe to your blog with the RSS feed. Most blogs have the little orange RSS feed icon that will be at the bottom of your article. You may also want to explain to your readers what it is and what it does. If you are not sure follow this link to read more about it. If you don't know about RSS feeds, you will need to apply for an OpenID.
Be personably. Mention your readers throughout your blog. Let them know you are as interested in them as they are in you.
Foremost, be original. Don't pick the same subjects others are writing about, don't grind the same subject to death, always keep a fresh perspective. You can find inspiration by googling the subject you are writing on and see what other's are saying and also by watching videos on youtube. Taking in a seminar or two is your city is another good way.
If you have other ideas about what keeps your blog fresh, comment below or email and let me know.
P.S. If you are an online business owner and would like to be interviewed for my new feature, "Online Business Owner of the Week," send me a quick bio and I will get back to you.
