On November 11th, Professor Steven L. Spiegel moderated a discussion with Knesset Member Lt. Gen. Shaul Mofaz, who is a former Minister of Defense and IDF Chief of Staff and is currently number two in the Kadima Party, after Tzipi Livni. Last week, MK Mofaz announced his new peace plan which would give the Palestinians a state with negotiable borders immediately, as well as an evacuation-compensation plan for West Bank settlers.

The mission of Israel Policy Forum (IPF) is to promote active U.S. engagement to achieve a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and peace and security for Israel with the Palestinians and the Arab states.
The Mofaz proposal is a controversial one in Israel. He told the Jerusalem Post, "Those who oppose me politically took what I said about Hamas and made it as if it was the focus of my plan. In the past I have talked to Hamas via Apache helicopters [used to kill Hamas leaders Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz Rantisi when he was defense minister]. But Hamas could come to power. And if it does, they will have to decide whether to continue what they call defiance or take the opportunity to have a state and build its foundations as a non-terrorist state."
Many interpret the Mofaz proposal as a political move to take control of the Kadima Party, which is now headed by Tzipi Livni.
Yet Iranian born Mofaz has excellent credentials and he hits home this point, "Time is not on Israel's side. We have to consider the Iranian nuclear umbrella."
IPF is an independent, American, nonpartisan, 501(C) 3 nonprofit organization that is committed to a strong and enduring U.S.-Israel relationship and to advancing the shared interests of the United States and the State of Israel.
IPF's core beliefs are that: 1) the Israeli-Palestinian and Israeli-Arab conflicts cannot be resolved without active and sustained diplomatic efforts by the United States government, and 2) resolving these conflicts is a strategic, national interest of the United States.
