The Volkswagen-Porsche Auto Group announced today that they have made over 4.4 million cars this calendar year, overtaking Toyota Motor Corporation, which has produced just over 4 million.
Analysts have speculated that while VW-Porsche may have taken the lead for now, that Toyota is in no way incapable of taking back the number one spot. Toyota, "has the capacity to make 10 million vehicles a year but it expects to make seven million vehicles in 2009," according to an article in The Guardian, a British newspaper.
VW-Porsche also has benifited from the takeover earlier this year, in which VW bought a controlling stake in Porsche after Porsche tried unsuccessfully to take control of Volkswagen.
General Motors, which was the world's largest automaker from 1931 to 2007, has fallen to third place.
