When people think of the month of October, most think of pumpkins and haystack rides, of Halloween costumes and the changing colors of fall. But for the beer drinkers out there, we think of Beerfest. Every year "The American Institute of Wine and Food" bring to Wichita their annual Beerfest and please audiences of all kinds. Whether you are a beer connoisseur or just love to drink, Beerfest offers a variety of fun and entertainment. Even for those people who aren't solid beer lovers, beerfest offers an opportunity for you to sample all kinds of different beers that you would have otherwise never tasted. http://www.midwestbeerfest.com/
This year the Midwest Beerfest did not dissapoint it's audience. With eight local Kansas breweries alone and a magnitude of worldwide beers, the attendee was sure to find something to his or her liking. The Shelton Brothers Brewery brought creativity to life with beer names that included, Bad Elf, Very Bad Elf, Criminally Bad Elf, Lump of Coal and many others. There were also local beers from here in Wichita from the infamous River City Brewery whose top beer was the multi-flavorful Tornado Alley. They also introduced a not-so-pleasant beer which had the appropriate name, The Grinch. http://www.rivercitybrewingco.com/
Personal favorites of my audience really enjoyed Ft. Collins' Chocolate Stout and the creative Flying Dog series which harbored beers cleverly named, In Heat Wheat, Doggie Style Pale Ale and Double Dog Pale Ale. Some not so tasty beers for the seasoned beer drinker were the fruit flavored kind, one named berry with a bright red color that resembled a champagne gone bad. But for the non-beer drinkers in the group, there were a multitude of options including margaritas, mojitos, pina coladas, and cosmopolitans.
And for the communtiy conscious friends, you can rest assured that the proceeds from Beerfest are going to a good cause. The main sponsor, Starkey Inc., sends all the proceeds to benefit people with disabilites to hold jobs and maintain active lifestyles. They employ 433 people in Wichita alone. www.starkey.org/lighthouse.html.
If tasting beers alone, isn't your style, seminars are held where you can get one-on-one attention from lead chefs in the area who help you know what beers to pair with holiday favorite foods. There was even a multitude of food vendors in the Century II Convention Hall that included, Old Chicago, Hooters, Picadilly and The Anchor.
Ultimately Beerfest is a solid investment and enjoyable experience. By only paying $30, you are welcome to try an unlimited number of beers from right here in your home town to all over the world. You also have the chance to meet some fascinating characters, as I had the pleasure of meeting Mclovin, (yes he is identical to the star of Superbad.) I would strongly encourage anyone to make Beerfest a part of your October traditions as I have because it is an extremely enjoyable one.
