Obese? Lawmakers call for informed consent
You may have heard the news….
New Yorkers are undergoing calorie sticker shock. In an effort to battle the bulge, NYC restaurants with more than 15 locations nationwide, are now required to divulge calorie counts. This impacts everything from that morning muffin at Starbucks to happy hour brews at TGI Fridays.
Guess what?
Seattle….we’re next.
Not to be outdone by our east-coast brethren, according to the
Wall Street Journal….”Starting next year, chain restaurants in Seattle will have to post not only calories, but also saturated fat, sodium and carbohydrates on menus.”
As a preview, I was curious to see how my usual Starbucks order fared. Lucky for me, Starbucks makes it easy with their handy
Nutritional Information search engine.
Here’s how my breakfast added up:
90 Calories Double Short Soy Latte
370 Calories Peppered Bacon, Egg & Cheddar Breakfast Sandwich
Total: 460 Calories
Not exactly the breakfast of champions, eh?
Well, Starbucks just might save me. Rumor has it…they plan to
nix the toasted breakfast sandwiches. (Apparently , the aroma of espresso is being overwhelmed by the scent of my toasted cheesy goodness….and in the
Grand Plan, that will not do.)
King County's
new nutritional ruling takes effect on January 1, 2009. No doubt…we’ll be hearing more as the
death knell date draws closer….
