In a hotly contested Mayoral Run-off election, Lee Bettis is the winner, according to the unofficial results.
Numbers posted at press time showed a 600 vote margin for Lee Bettis over incumbent Tom Bayliss.
Both candidates ran solid campaigns and had moments of highs and lows. Many of their supporters were fiercely defending and promoting their candidates throughout the day.
One supporter was particularly proud of Lee Bettis...his mother was at the polls, talking about her son with pride and hope...and with grace and charm for those who might disagree. She is a true lady.
Mayor Bayliss' family was also out at the polls, promoting the Mayor and also behaving with good humor.
I witnessed a number of instances with opposing workers helping each other and behaving as friends.
This is a good sign that the City needed. There have been harsh words at times, some husbands and wives reporting they each voted for a different candidate. New Bern has had a long double campaign and now needs to come together to face a future that will hold both promise and problems.
The one area that shows a loss for everyone is low turnout. Across Craven County, in several races the margin of victory was fewer than 20 votes. Total turnout was less than 20% of registered voters. This level of apathy means that a mere 20 % of voters control 100 % of the people in the county.
What many fail to realize is that your local officials, not Washington, have more effect on your day to day lives. A point to consider when deciding to stay home.
