The last votes are in...at least in the advanced voting.
Voters in Craven County that wanted to take advantage of early voting had until 1 PM Saturday to cast their ballot at the Craven County Administration Building in New Bern.
While there were no long lines, I witnessed a fairly steady pattern of voters coming to make their choices in various races, including the hotly contested Mayoral Race for New Bern. The original vote in October left Lee Bettis, challenger and Tom Bayliss, current Mayor as the two highest vote getters in a field of three, leading to a run-off.
Both men have campaigned hard and the public has gotten involved as well.
An anonymous fax led to the revelation that Mr. Bettis, a respected Attorney, had some minor brushes with the law over the years, most of which were either dismissed or were very minor items.
It was also revealed that one group had been responsible for a large campaign contribution.
Mayor Bayliss has been chastised for not preventing a Health Care Coverage plan that would make several Board members and himself eligible for health care coverage paid by the city for life back in 2003. He noted that as Mayor, he only votes to break a tie.
Turnout in this race has been very high in early voting, with the voting day turn out predicted to be high as well.
There will be much interest in the results on Tuesday...and in how well the city comes together after the election.
