Three H1N1 vaccination clinics in Pennington County have been canceled. The clinics were set to take place November 10, 12 and 19 at Central High School and Stevens High School, and also at New Underwood High School on November 12. The new dates for the clinics are November 19 at Hill City and New Underwood high schools between 2 pm and 6pm and November 21 at Central High School between 10 am and 2pm. The shots are being provided free of charge on a first come, first serve basis by the South Dakota Department of Health.
Difficulty in getting the vaccine has been cited as the reason for the cancellations. When the clinics were announced it was known that there was a possibility that shortages would cause complications. As these local clinics are being rescheduled the CDC announced that more people under the age of 65 have already been hospitalized than would normally be expected for an entire flu season with the more common strains.
The good news from the CDC weekly briefing is that more vaccine is available, despite the fact that the available amount is significantly less than their goal of 40 million doses.
Between the CDC, the World Heath Organization, and the European Medicines Agency all have slightly different recommendations as to how many doses children need and occasionally differ on who should be targeted for vaccinations. New announcements about the safety of the vaccine include the declaration that it is safe for pregnant women, and that they should be vaccinated because they are at a greater risk for infection and that the vaccination for the novel flu can be given at the same time as the seasonal vaccine.
