No matter how low their ratings sink, some TV cable news shows continue to behave like sponsors of the Obama administration with the result that fewer viewers are tuning in.  It is almost as if they are trying to drive their audiences away.

For example, during the month of May, 2009, Fox News (FNC)  was, as usual, the top-rated cable news network. FNC had nine of the top-ten cable news shows with an increase of 30% in the coveted 25-54 demographics compared to a year earlier. At the same time, MSNBC dropped 9% of its viewers and CNN was down 37%. Meanwhile, Fox's signature programs showed a double-digit gain.

Those signatures shows on Fox included:

  • Glenn Beck with a 130% gain.
  • The O'Reilly Factors with a 31% gain.
  • Hannity with a 31% gain.
  • On the Record with Greta Van Susteren with a 45% gain.

By contrast, MSNBC's experienced:

  • Countdown with Keith Olberman lost 26%.
  • Rachel Maddow posting the weakest tune-in since its September 2008 launch.

CNN also lost viewers:

  • Anderson Cooper 360 was down 34%.

It makes one wonder why MSNBC keeps presenting signature programs that fewer and fewer people are watching while Fox keeps drawing away its viewers. Meanwhile,  while MSNBC continues to play down such as things are reports from the Congessional Budget Office that said the economy would shrink because of Obama's stimulus package, Fox goes into detail about why this is expected to happen.
