After throwing his support to Democrat Barack Obama during the presidential race against Sen. John McCain, it appears that General and former Secretary of State Colin Powell is having second thoughts about his choice.
Powell was the first African-American to serve as secretary of state under President George W. Bush. He was also national security advisor to President Reagan and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under George H.W. Bush.
In an interview to be broadcast on CNN's "State of the Union with John King" Sunday, July 5, 2009, Powell expressed concern that Obama's ambitious iniatives may be enlarging the size of government and that the federal debt it too much.
He said:
I'm concerned at the number of programs that are being presented, the bills associated with these programs and the additional government that will be needed to execute them.
Powell also said that, in regard to Obama's spending;
...And we can't pay for it all.
According to an article in the Washington Times, Powell's concerns, that began with hard-line fiscal conservatives, is now spreading to moderates about the rate of government spending and debt and the long-term impact on the country's fiscal sustainability and national security. The national debt now stands at $11.5 trillion and the deficit at close to $2 trillion.
