To Try Men's Soul: A Novel of George Washington and the Fight for America's Freedom by Newt Gingrich, William R. Forstechen and Albert Hanswer follows three men who played different roles  history: George Washington, Thomas Paine, and Jonathan Van Dorn. Dorn was a private in Washington's army.

At the time Washington is preparing for the crossing of the Delaware.  Instead of being portrayed as bold and courageous, as in Emanuel Leutz's painting, the General is full of doubt on the night of December 25, 1776.

The novel uses the thoughts and private fears of the three men as the darkest moments of the Revolutionary War are explored. The authors have used detailed research and an incredible depth of military insight to provide a rare and personal perspective of the men who fought for, and founded the United States of America.

The novel was released on October 20, 2009, by Thomas Dunne Books. The timing seems appropriate at this time in America history as a reminder of the kind of men who led America into being a country that brought its citizens the Constitution and Bill of Rights. It provides an exciting history lesson presented in fiction form.

About the authors:

Newt Gingrich is a former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. He is a member of the Defense Policy Board and the longest-serving teacher of the Joint War Fighting course for Major Generals.  William R. Forstchen, Ph.d. is a Faculty Fellow at the Montreat College.
