For better or worse it appears that the voters of Boston were not sufficiently convinced by Michael Flaherty’s mayoral campaign that it was time for a change in city government.
With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Thomas Menino has won his unprecedented fifth term as mayor, gathering 57.3 percent of the vote to Flaherty’s 42.4.
Although Flaherty trailed Menino throughout most of the night as the votes continued to pour in, it was only towards the end of the night that Menino was able to break away from what had been a lead of just one or two percentage points.
Flaherty officially conceded his efforts against the mayor at approximately 9:45 p.m. while 95 percent of the precincts had reported.
After tonight, the City Council has a few new faces, incumbents John Connolly and Stephen will be joined as at-large Councilors by Felix Arroyo and Ayanna Pressley.
Salvatore Lamattina, Chuck Turner, Michael Ross and Mark Ciommo were all able to retain their seats on the Council against challengers, while the remaining Councilors will return having run unopposed.
Flaherty and rival-turned-running mate Sam Yoon who both continue to serve as At-large City Councilors, but forfeit reelection bids to enter the mayoral race, will be on the job market as soon as their terms expire.
With the dust from the most competitive challenge to Menino’s mayoral career, what will his reaction to the race be? Will Menino take action to address the many criticisms against his administration, such as the Boston Redevelopment Authority and politic strategists who claim to delete their e-mails, or will he take the results as testament to the idea of “don’t fix what isn’t broke.”
