Mayor backs plan to revamp Rose Quarter
PORTLAND – It’s unofficial - the fate of the Memorial Coliseum, but Portland leaders released a plan Tuesday to officially raze the 39-year-old building as part of a reshaping of the Rose Quarter.
Mayor Sam Adams proposed replacing the Coliseum with a baseball stadium as part of the effort to bring Major League Soccer to Portland.
The stadium would allow the Portland Beavers, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, to move from PGE Park, which would allow for that stadium to be reconfigured to a soccer-specific stadium for the Portland Timbers.
Major League Soccer recently awarded an expansion franchise to Timbers owner Merritt Paulson based on the city’s $88 million agreement with Paulson to build a stadium for the Beavers.
“Now is the time for action,” Adams said. “We have talked about redeveloping this area for decades.”
The new baseball stadium would be accompanied with a number of other buildings designed for retail outlets and restaurants to make a thriving sports and entertainment area, which the Blazers have been seeking for years.
The play, which has the initial approval of the Blazers as well as the Beavers and Timbers, is set for a vote of the City Council April 22.
A representative of the Portland Winter Hawks, who play in the Coliseum, was not at the meeting.
The city will hold a public meeting Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Leftbank building at 240 N. Broadway. For more info: www.oregonsports.com
