Wilmington, Delaware celebrates fine craft and vintage autos!
Drive – or better yet, bicycle – through the picturesque Red Clay Valley in Yorklyn, Delaware and you’ll discover not one but two truly unique cultural venues. One is the Marshall Steam Car Museum at Auburn Heights Preserve, which houses the largest operating steam car museum in America. And the other is the Center for the Creative Arts (CCArts) nestled in a former elementary school on Upper Snuff Mill Row.
November 14 and 15 is the perfect time to visit both sites in the Yorklyn National Historic District since the two institutions are partnering to offer the visiting public a multi-faceted experience. CCArts is sponsoring their Annual Artisans Show this weekend at the Center from 10am to 5pm each day and you can purchase a combo ticket that provides admission to both the craft show and the Marshall Museum, as well as a free shuttle bus linking the two sites from 12 to 3 on both Saturday and Sunday!
You’ll swear you’re back at the turn of twentieth century when you visit the Marshall Steam Car Museum and Mansion at Auburn Heights. Ride one of just two the steam-powered buses in the entire world, tour the property on a 1/8 scale train, or just marvel at their early automobile collection that includes Stanley Steams dating back to 1902 as well as vintage Packards and even a 1916 electric car. How’s that for being ahead of the times?
The Artisans Show at CCArts is a great opportunity to purchase fine crafts for holiday gifts or a keepsake for the family. They have it all – jewelry, wood turning and carving, art glass, stained glass, fused glass, pottery and ceramics, prints and water colors, fabrics and fiber arts, sculpture and metalwork. And the $11 admission fee ($6 for Artisans Show alone), admits visitors to both sites.
When the Center for the Creative Arts isn’t being transformed into the epicenter for fine craft in Delaware, it offers what is perhaps the most comprehensive arts education program in the First State. There’s something for everyone. Their After School Art Club offers students the opportunity to relax and unwind after school. Home schooled children will love working with oil, acrylic and watercolor paints, oil pastels, pencil, charcoal, pen and ink and more under a certified art educator. See the
CCArts website for a full schedule of classes that range from painting, pottery and jewelry to music and dance lessons.
And on your way to Yorklyn, be sure to visit the quaint community of
Centreville. This 19
th-century Delaware village is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and houses some of the region’s most unique art and antiques emporiums, as well as historic
Buckley’s Tavern.
Centreville is quite literally the “center” of the Brandywine Valley, surrounded by enormous country estates and world-class museums and public gardens.
TravelTip: By a fortunate coincidence, November 14 is also opening day for a wonderful new
fine craft exhibition at the Delaware Art Museum (less than 10 miles from Yorklyn), featuring Master Delaware Artisans from all over the state. So make a weekend of it and see the finest craft Delaware has to offer!
