It's Halloween eve. Darkness falls on Statesville NC. Suddenly the lights come on at The Second Fret Coffeehouse & Music Hall. It's SHOWTIME at The Fret's Halloween Costume Karaoke Contest. Owner Bob Barber asked me to be a secret judge over the contest. The other two judges were his wife Lisa Barber and the Fret's manager April Jacobson.
Ponytail Bob's Karaoke provided the sound system. Bob's wife Dorothea ran the show while Bob was in "makeup" getting his elaborate costume ready. He made a grand entrance later in the evening as an oriental emporer. The house was packed and all but 2 people had costumes. Not everyone sang, but the ones who did made an everlasting impression on all of the party goers.
The Fret was giving away two $25 Fret Gift certificates for singers who performed a song related to their costumes. Franco Romano won the adult entry certificate mainly for his amazing impersonation of The Late Great Louis Armstrong. He wow'd the audience with an Armstrong voice that brought back memories for those old enough to appreciate Armstrong's music legacy.
In the under age category, Emily Bock and Trista Byers did a duet with great vocal talents proudly displayed. The judges didn't even have to think twice about the decision on that award. The two girls will split the $25 certificate.
Everyone had the chance to sing at least 2 rounds, and one amazing lady named Carol, did quite a few numbers with an amazing singing voice. Her husband wasn't bad either!!
All things said, the party was a huge success and had a good turnout despite the rain. Good food, good drink, and fun entertainment were the perfect way to celebrate a safe Halloween in Statesville, North Carolina.
