Fred C. Adams knew what he was doing when he set up a summer Shakespeare Festival in the middle of hot and arid Cedar City, Utah. A mere two hours north of Las Vegas, Cedar city is a hub for some 150,000 annual summer tourists as they wander through the area’s great National Parks. Seeing an opportunity to entertain tourists as they relax from a day of hiking, Mr. Adams embarked upon building a repertory theater akin to the famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Almost 40 years since its inception, the Utah Shakespeare Festival has developed into a world-renowned cultural destination.
The Utah Shakespeare Festival is home to two extraordinary theaters; The Randall L. Jones theatre for indoor performances and the Adam’s Shakespeare Theatre for outdoor evening performances. You might recognize the Adam’s Theatre from the BBC’s Shakespeare Series. The BBC chose the Adam’s theatre because of its incredible likeness to the original Old Globe Theatre in London.
The Utah Shakespeare Festival performs two plays a day, one matinee at 2pm and an evening performance at 8pm with many opportunities for backstage tours and pre-play discussions. During most summer evenings the Utah Shakespeare Festival offers a free Green Show by the Adam’s Theatre where you can enjoy dance and music as it was back in Shakespeare’s day.
