Getting exercise is more expensive once winter hits. It's harder to make use of inexpensive outdoor forms of exercise like running in the park or bike riding. Yoga, pilates and aerobics classes are at least $15 a class, and often considerably more.

Here are some low-cost, and even free, alternatives:

  • IntenSati is a revolutionary workout fusing high-energy aerobics, martial arts, dance, yoga, and strength conditioning. Combining spoken affirmations with simple choreography, intenSati provides a heart-pumping, exhilarating workout that builds physical, mental, and spiritual muscle. Instructor Cara Greene Epstein offers this workout at BAX on Sunday evenings from 7 to 8 PM. It's by donation only!
  • Bend and Bloom Yoga offers a community yoga flow class on Tuesdays from 10 to 11:30 AM. Pay what you can!
  • The Shambhala Yoga & Dance Center on Mark Ave. at Washington Ave. has several pay-what-you-can community classes.
  • Third Root Community Health Center on Marlborough Road has a variety of yoga classes available. A strong premise of the center is that no one should be excluded from participating, so they offer a sliding scale fee that you determine on your own with tools that they provide. They also offer acupuncture, mediation instruction and other services on a sliding scale.

Another way to attend low-cost classes is to take advantage of the offers that most studios have for first-time attendees. You might get 3 classes for $10 each, for example. There are enough yoga and pilates studios in Brooklyn to keep you going for quite a while that way!

Several studios offer deep discounts for clients who are willing to clean yoga mats or perform other necessary services for them. If you have something to offer in exchange, try the barter system with studio owners.

Another great way to get a cheap workout is to try DVD workouts. Click on Top selling exercise DVDs: build the right video workout library to get ideas.
