With nearly all local schools and many businesses closing to honor Veterans Day on November 11, 2009, there are many activities to fill the time.  As it is a day for remembrance, it is also an opportunity for teaching our children about the sacrifices made by our fellow Americans.  Depending on children's age and maturity level, parents can give an in-depth history lesson or a simple description of what the day is about.  Following are several places you can visit where ceremonies will be held:

In Alexandria, VA, Mount Vernon Estates will have free admission for all active duty military personnel and veterans, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with non military cost $13.00 for adults and $6.00 for children.  Enjoy a live concert by the All-Veteran Barbershop Chorus at 11:00 AM.  There will also be a wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of President George Washington at 2:00 PM.  Visit www.mountvernon.org for more information.  Located South of Old Town, Alexandria, via George Washington Parkway.

In Arlington, VA, at Arlington National Cemetery, the traditional Veteran's Day wreath laying ceremony will take place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at 11:00 AM, followed by an observance program in the ampitheatre.  Visit www.arlingtoncemetery.org or call 703-607-8000 for more information.

In Washington, DC, there are several monuments to visit:

  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial.  At 1:00 PM there will be a wreath laying ceremony.  Constitution Avenue and Henry Bacon Drive, NW.  www.nps.gov/vive/index.htm.
  • Vietnam Women's Memorial.  9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  Veterans will tell stories of their military experience.  Parents should judge appropriateness based on the ages of the children.  Constitution Avenue and Henry Bacon Drive, NW.  www.vietnamwomensmemorial.org.
  • World War ll Memorial.  At 8:00 AM there will be a wreath laying ceremony.  Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue, NW.  www.nps.gov/nwwm.
  • Navy War Memorial.  Ceremonies throughout the day, more geared toward adults, with a 12:00 Noon book signing with author David Sears, among other events.  701 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.  www.navymemorial.org.
