A growing segment in tourism is “eco luxury” travel where travelers blend their love of the world and the environment with their love of upscale hotel amenities and high-style comforts.

One company that specializes in environmentally-friendly luxury travel is Eco Luxury, which has about 80 luxury retreats around the world where travelers can volunteer to help the environment or can work with the local community where their luxury retreat is located.

Some examples of volunteer-focused luxury trips that can be planned by Eco Luxury include:

- Children in the Wilderness program at the Kulala Wilderness Camp in Namibia where volunteers give children a sense of “hope, purpose and a possibility of a brighter future” by tutoring them and simply spending time with them. The Kulala Wilderness Camp is on a 46,000-acre private reserve with six Meru-style tents with in-suite bathrooms and showers. The tents are simple in decor but comfortable and romantic and offer views of the surrounding desert (one of the oldest in the world), as well as sightings of Cape Fox, Aardwolf, Blackbacked Jackals, Bat-eared Foxes, and Spotted Hyena, to name a few.

- At the luxury Al Tarfa Desert Sanctuary in Egypt, which made Conde Nast Traveler’s Hot List for 2009, guests work with local masons on various projects. The sanctuary has 20 free-standing villas with wrought iron beds, carved wood tables, local textiles, and outdoor terraces, and in some villas, fireplaces and private plunge pools. According to Conde Nast Traveler:The place is especially romantic at night, with paths lit by cut-out clay vases, straw bird cages, and other traditional objects repurposed as lanterns.” There is also an on-site spa, pool, and riding stable.
