The American Renaissance encompassed art, architecture, and design from about 1876 to 1914. The United States was expressing it's confidence in the world by making art and design that claimed the US was the heir of Greek democracy and Roman Classicism. Also known as the "City Beautiful" movement it was the inspiration for much creativity. Providence is a centerpiece of the movement with many surviving examples of the period, and was the scene of a recent symposium held by the Providence Preservation Society in association with the Rhode Island School of Design. At the conclusion of the two day symposium a Gala was held to raise awareness, do some fundraising, and have a good time. The Gala was held in a building that is being preserved while it also undergoes a transformation from bank to residence.
