Depaul students, Global Game Jam '09

Gamesindustry.biz reports that the success of the 2009 Global Game Jam has set high expectations for this year's upcoming GGJ. The GGJ'09 was a 48-hour event which allowed 1650 people to meet at 54 venues to make 370 video games.

Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota was one of the 54 venues that participated in last year's GGJ.  Steve Graham, a professor at DSU oversaw groups of students who produced games like Geezer vs. Ninja and Narwhal 2: Revenge of the Whale. The favorite of the event turned out to be Narwhal 2, where the player must save passengers that have been doomed to go down with a sinking cruise ships.  The player must stack passengers to reach his fiancé, trapped at the top of the ship.

In an article in Gamasutra, writer Stephen Jacobs describes the many colorful aspects of the game.

"A varied NPC cast of "normal" people, fat guys, brats that throw candy, and Lobster-Throwing Ninjas populate the ship, which has had its hull punctured by a giant whale with a huge golden horn, a Viking hat, and a beard. Perhaps this team could have used a few more constraints"

The 2010 Global Game Jam will take place on January 29-31, and the organizers are hoping to triple the size of the event to 150 locations.  This opening up of venues is set to attract over 3000 budding game developers. There will be restraints set upon the participants, but a few more variables will be added to international venues to accentuate cultural diversity.

From GI.biz:

"We're looking to make the 2010 Global Game Jam even more global, with more games, more people, more interaction, more fun, innovation and creativity," said Susan Gold, founder of the Global Game Jam. "Now is when we're starting the search for new venues, leaders and sponsors to grow the event and draw attention to the amazing diversity and talent in game development around the world."
