The military serves this country, no matter the political party in power or changes happening in it. They, like every other citizen of this country, have a guaranteed right to vote. The fifteenth and the nineteenth amendments to the U.S. Constitution opened that right to everyone, no matter their gender or skin color. States, such as Virginia, can hinder that right because of the tenth amendment. The late sending of ballots, as the current lawsuit against the Virginia State Board of Elections alleges, is part of the disenfranchisement that has occurred by such actions. The sending via email is just a small patch of a bigger issue.
It is a travesty that states find a way to hinder the voices of the men and women overseas and are willing to die for this country, while giving the people here that voice. The state of Virginia is being sued over sending out absentee ballots too late, though they have instituted a ballot by email this year. There needs to be a look at the overall system to ensure that issues never arise again. The military vote is not a partisan vote and is the voice of people serving in the line of fire for this country.
The U.S. Senate currently has a bipartisan bill to help service members cast their vote. The same bill passed the senate in the last congress, but, as with this time, made no headway in the House of Representatives. It is odd that this nonpartisan issue is making very little ground in so many places. This is an issue in which the citizens of this country should protect the military.
