Tuesday night came and went, and unfortunately for the Nets, things went the way they were supposed to.
New Jersey will own the 11th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, going down June 25 from Madison Square Garden. The Nets clearly have a need at the guard position, with Brook Lopez, Yi Jianlian and Ryan Anderson manning the four and the five, Vince Carter holding down the small forward position, and the versatile Devin Harris at either point guard or shooting guard. New Jersey would love an athletic guard to team with Harris in the backcourt, let's see who they can take at 11.
Though the Nets would absolutely love the 6'5 shooting guard James Harden from Arizona State, athletic Memphis combo guard Tyreke Evans, or USC's raw star DeMar DeRozan, but they probably won't get them unless they trade up. The same can be said for Davidson sensation Stephen Curry, who would make a really exciting backcourt mate for Harris. But there were still a bunch of college stars that will be on the board when Rod Thorn and Lawrence Frank have to make the big decision.
If the Nets want to go the point guard route, North Carolina's Ty Lawson, Syracuse's Johnny Flynn, VCU's Eric Maynor and UCLA's Jrue Holliday would make good additions. If they want Carter to play the two, wing players like Louisville standouts Earl Clark and Terrance Williams are excellent decision makers who are athletic and versatile to play multiple positions at a high level. Wake Forest's James Johnson and Pittsburgh's DeJuan Blair would be the choices if they want to beef up down low. So there are a lot of options to choose from depending on what position the Nets want, and now we get to speculate what direction they will go in. And I'll be here every step of the way.
