The Nets had fallen on some hard times after 27 games, losing three out of their last four to fall to 13-14 on the season. Two days before the 25th of December, all New Jersey wanted for Christmas was to get a win in Indiana to get to .500.
Game 28- Devin Harris' jumper as time expired lifted the Nets to a huge 108-107 win on the road against the Pacers to get New Jersey to 14-14 on the season. Harris had 29 points and 11 assists and Vince Carter had 38 points and eight assists. Keyon Dooling had another strong performance off the bench, scoring 11 points.
Game 29- On the night after Christmas, the Bobcats took the first of a two night home and home series with the Nets, 95-87 at the Izod Center to bring the Nets down to 14-15. New Jersey shot just 40 percent as Carter led the team with 19 points. Harris and Brook Lopez each had 14 points and Keyon Dooling had another 11 points off the bench. New Jersey has started to get inconsistent play from Yi Jianlian, who had just seven points in the loss.
Game 30- One night later in Charlotte, the Nets won a back and forth game with the Bobcats, 114-103 in Overtime to get back to .500 at 15-15 and an astonishing 10-4 on the road. Carter led the Nets with 28, Harris had 26, Jarvis Hayes had 14 off the bench and Josh Boone had 12. Dooling and Yi each had nine points, but Jianlian got his on 2-10 shooting.
Game 31- Returning home to the unfriendly confines of the Izod Center, the Nets got outscored 30-15 in the fourth quarter and lost 100-87 to Chicago to fall to 15-16 on the season. Derrick Rose had 21 points and a career high 13 assists for the Bulls. Carter had 31 and Harris had 26, but no other player scored in double figures as the team could not get a major scoring contribution from another player to go to 5-12 at home.
Game 32- There was no new years eve party for the Nets in the Motor City, as the Nets lost an ugly game to the Pistons, 85-73 to fall to 15-17 on the season. Detroit led 40-29 at halftime, and the Nets shot just 37 percent from the field. Carter was ejected from the game in the second quarter for arguing with a referee, and scored just four points. Lopez led the team with 23 points and 12 rebounds, Harris had 19 points and nine assists, Yi was a pleasant surprise with 12 points and Hayes had 10.
Game 33- The Nets opened up their 2009 portion of the season on January 2nd with a bang. Carter's deep three at the buzzer gave the Nets a 93-91 OT win at home over Atlanta to push the team up to 16-17 on the season. New Jersey was down by 20 at halftime before a furious second half rally got the team to the extra session, and won on Carter's heroics. Carter had 18, Harris had a team high 26 points and 11 assists, Lopez grabbed 11 rebounds, Bobby Simmons made a rare contribution with 12 points and Yi had a solid eight and nine. Hayes also had nine points in the win.
Game 34- The Nets went down to South Beach and took another game into overtime, but could not get the win against the Heat. Dwayne Wade scored 29 points as Miami came back from a 16 point defecit to beat New Jersey 101-96 in OT to drop the Nets to 16-18. The Nets shot a shade under 40 percent but had all five of their starters in double figures. With Harris out with a sore right shoulder, Dooling had 23 points, seven assists and five boards in the starting lineup. Carter had 20, nine boards and six dimes, Simmons had 19 and nine boards, Yi had 13 and Lopez had 12.
Game 35- New Jersey came home to battle the woeful Kings and overcame a 12 point halftime defecit to hand Sacramento their 11th straight road loss, 98-90 to get the Nets to 17-18. Harris sat out the second half with his shoulder injury, and Yi of all people shouldered the load with 22 points and 13 boards. Carter had 29 points, nine boards and seven dimes, Hayes had 12 off the bench and Dooling and Boone each had nine. It was good to see a total team effort after Harris had to leave the game.
Game 36- Playing another awful team, the Nets won their second in a row and third straight at home, 100-89 over Memphis. New Jersey led by 14 after the first quarter and never looked back despite Harris missing yet another game. It was yet another outstanding performance for Yi Jianlian, who had 20 points and six rebounds. Carter scored 25 and dished out 12 assists, Lopez had 17 and eight, Simmons had 12, bench player Eduardo Najera had a season high nine and Hayes had eight. The Nets went to an even 18-18 on the season.
