The word recession stirs up so many feelings of fear, insecurity, guilt and uncertainty when it comes to spending money. This is especially true for spending that cash shopping, dining, pampering or traveling. By taking advantage of many local and national loyalty programs consumers can find additional savings and benefits, and sigh a breath of relief that they can shop with less guilt.

The majority of Philadelphia tri-state population are still employed and living in their homes. As the injured markets begin to recover reports are showing an increase in consumer confidence and behaviors. Taking advantage of a loyalty program, such as frequent shopper points or member cards, can save money and add value to your spending excursions…when used properly.

Many national chains, such as department stores, airlines and hotels have been rewarding their loyal customers for years. Recently, smaller local retailers have jumped on the bandwagon, offering coupons, discounts and rewards to their returning spenders. If you like a specific retailer, restaurant or hotel, the incentives could save you money on purchases you were going to make either way.

The challenge is avoiding purchases you would not have otherwise made. Many shoppers admit to unscheduled mall trips solely because they received a coupon or sale notice. They may have gotten a deal, but the savings was lost because that shopper would not have shopped that day if he or she was not part of a loyalty program. How many times have you been swayed to spend a few extra bucks to get a bigger discount or free gift? You get the picture.

Some great national and local loyalty programs worth checking out:

-DSW Shoe Warehouse: For every $250 spent in the store, you’ll receive a $10 coupon. You’ll also receive coupons for additional savings and free gifts.

-Credit card rewards: All the points earned from purchases can be redeemed for cash, travel, merchandise or gift cards. The more you charge, the more points you get. The key to really benefit here is to make sure the monthly balance is paid. Otherwise the savings is negated by high credit interest rates.

-Atlantic City casinos: If you are a gambler, even just a little, rewards programs can offer free or discounted hotel stays, meals or gambling credit. The Harrah’s Total Rewards program will offer benefits to even the most conservative gamblers.

-Southwest Airlines

-Ulta: Receive gift offers and points for your beauty purchases.
