There's scientific proof that spoiling yourself with a professional spa services provides health benefits. Spas provide a variety of services provided by licensed professionals. Treatments help clientele relax, relieve stress and strain. Spas usually have a hefty price tag but the health benefits that accompany services will be worth every penny. The word spa is derived from the Latin word Solus per aqua which means health through water. Salons offer hydrotherapy treatments that help the body relax and put you in a better mood. Hydrotherapy is the use of water to revitalize, maintain and restore health. Hydrotherapy treatments available in most local spas include saunas, whirl pools, hot tubs, steam bath and hand or foot baths.

A massage can not only feel incredible, it can also provide amazing health benefits. To receive proper health benefits you should go to a professionally licensed massage therapist. When done properly, massage treatments can reduce stress, ease tension, relieve aches and pains, improve circulation, strengthen connective tissues, improve mental alertness, promote more restful sleep and strengthen the immune system.

There are many types of massages including Swedish massage, hot stone therapy massage, integral massage, maternity massage, neuromuscular, deep tissue, concentrated reflexology, scalp and face massage and hot oil massage. When looking to get a professional massage there are guidelines you should follow that will help put you at ease.

Guidelines:

1. Arrive in plenty of time to relax before your service.

2. Undress to your comfort level.

3. Tell your therapist if you have any areas of your body that are injured, sore or tense prior to your service. Also inform the therapist of any health conditions.

4. If during the massage, you have any discomfort, let your service person know immediately.

5. RELAX! Allow the therapist to move your limbs into position. Breathe slowly and deeply letting all your tension to be released.

Cellulite reductions are another spa treatment that can provide healthy benefits. Cellulite reductions address the body issues people have such as loose skin, scars, stretch marks, cellulite and deep muscle pain. Treatments are costly but can provide health benefits. As a result of cellulite treatments, skin will tighten up over a period of treatments (that's where treatments can skyrocket in price) and have a healthy, more youthful look. It can reduce scar tissue and fibrosis, especially after liposuction surgery. Cellulite treatments can also promote better circulation, lymphatic drainage and elimination of toxic fluids.

Body scrubs are an effective way to give skin a vibrant and glowing effect. When dead, dry skin cells have been sloughed away, the skin more readily retains moisture which provides a crucial component to overall skin health. A body scrub is a mixture of coarse granules in a gel or lotion. The granules are usually made from sea salt, oatmeal, apricots or walnuts.

Body scrubs should be done in moderation, perhaps once a week because excessive scrubbing can damage skin layers. Body scrubs can provide health benefits such as improved circulation, stress relief, improved skin elasticity, removal of skin toxins and tension relief.

If you would like to experience an at-home body scrub treatment before spending money at a spa, try the following home made body scrub recipes:

Brown sugar body scrub:

2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons ground oats
2 tablespoons aloe vera gel
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 teaspoon almond oil

Directions: Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. Mix until it resembles a paste. Apply on moist skin; the best time is after you took a shower. It will help the skin cells slough off faster. Use circular motion and massage gently using your fingertips. Rinse off with warm water.

Chocolate body scrub recipe:

3 tablespoons of cocoa powder
1 cup of brown sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla oil (extract will work)

Directions: Mix all the ingredients Apply on moist skin, the best time is after you took a shower. It will help the skin cells slough off faster. Use circular motion and massage gently using your fingertips. Rinse off with warm water.

Exotic Coffee Scrub:

1 cup of finely ground coffee
1/2 cup of fresh yogurt

Directions: Mix the two ingredients. Gently rub the paste onto your body and massage in circular motion. Rinse with warm water.
