On Saturday, December 20th, the Pearl Fishers will reunite with Black Friday at Towson's Recher Theatre. The two bands first played together at the Towson Armory in 1988 and again in 1989, selling out the 9:30 Club on Black Friday.
Both bands are former members of the Merkin Records stable of artists of the late 1980's early 1990's and have experienced a Renaissance of late and have begun making local appearances.
The Pearl Fishers are still fronted by local legend and former Grey March vocalist, Trip Burch. Guitarist, Paul Anderson has also remained a constant. While not an original member, Kurt Tilling remains part of the band though switching from bass to guitar. Former All Mighty Senator, Brett Sharbuagh, until recently, served as the band's bassist. CJ Johnson has replaced Sax White as the band's drummer.
The Pearl fishers were originally formed in 1987 by Paul Anderson, Dave Frye, Trip Burch and Adam Himelfarb. Sax White of the "Difference" and the "Fugue" later joined as the band's drummer. Paul, Dave and Adam had just left
"Tangled Hangers" and acquired Trip as vocalist after the breakup
of "Grey March".
The Pearl Fishers have released one full length album, been included on a Merkin compilation and released a
mini album earlier this year.
Recently, I had an opportunity to chat with Trip and Paul about the band.
Andy Belt: How has band sound or direction changed?
Pearl Fishers: From the onset it was reminiscent of an early eighties/alternative/post punk sound- after our
reunion ( 13 years ) we have developed a more polished "poppy" sound.
AB: Who does the composing?
Pearl Fishers: The older material was a group effort- the majority of the newer material is written by guitarist Kurt Tilling.
AB: How do you describe the sound?
PF: indie style pop with a melodic edge to it.
AB: How do you manage career, family, - adult life with playing in the band?
PF: A couple of us use alcohol to manage, some of us don't.
AB: What was your favorite gig? worst gig?
PF: Fav was with the Feelies at the Grog and Tankard- circa 1991 - very large captive audience attended- worst -
ironically enough the Grog and Tankard in d.c circa 1992- no turnout
except for drunk girl wanting to hear cover songs- sound guy had us
turned down to less than zero ( much to Paul's unhappiness ) ( hopefully
not the recher show ).
AB: Your opinion of what has become of the local music scene?
PF: Its become so much more diverse- in the early eighties it was basically one
sound-( thrashy, angst punk sound ) now you have a multitude of sounds
from: shoegaze,retro eighties/keyboard , rock-a-billy, alt.country,punk
bands that deserve mention include- oranges band, gun wife
gone,puddle, lake trout,ponytail.
AB: Upcoming releases?
PF: We are posting new material for download ( mp3 )
on myspace.
AB:Upcoming shows?
PF: Dec. 20th w/ Black Friday ,and Freeway 111-
word around town is that a lot of the old-heads will be coming out
especially to see the re-union of Merkin band Black Friday.
Don't miss the Pearl Fishers with Black Friday and Freeway 111 at the Recher on December 20th.
