Travel as a family is different than travel as adults. And who better than other parents understands that a delayed flight can mean the difference between landing before naptime or flying with a overly tired child, or that trying a cute new local bistro can land you with no kid friendly meals, starving little ones and you trying t pull together a meal out of snacks in the diaper bag.
We've traveled a lot with our children, starting when they were both very young. Both are great travelers, but we've had our moments where both children have let us know with definitive force that they were not happy with whatever was happening at the time. One of the tricks of traveling with children is being able to adapt yourself and your children to changes in your situation.
Another trick is preparing yourself for the trip. Researching your vacation ahead of time can tell you that the really cool museum you want to visit is full of priceless vases on display at eye level and probably not the best choice for your toddler, or that the quaint hotel that has cheap rooms has one bathroom down the hall, not helpful for your potty training child.
Before you travel, check out Trekaroo for reviews on local attractions, activities, and hotels. The site is run by parents and is full of helpful tips and tricks for traveling with children. Read reviews of the area attractions from families who have been there. You can even post a specific question and recieve answers direct from other parents. The site is still growing and not every state is represented, but they are accepting submissions, so go ahead and rave about your favorite places to visit and then find some new ones to try.
We decided when our son was very young that we would travel with our children. That's not saying we don't enjoy the occasional night away, but our children are part of our family and we do things as a family unit. Lydie, who runs Travel is More Fun With Kids completely agrees. Her site is full of ideas to help make traveling with children more fun. She writes about how to take better vacation photos, finding deals and steals on airfare and hotels, and tips to make activities more child friendly, like bringing binoculars to the opera.
