After the devastating 1989 earthquake in the City, the SFFD, SFPD and various community groups realized that in a large emergency, the municipal response would likely be overwhelmed and citizens would need to have the skills to take care of themselves and their neighbors. The result was NERT or the Neighborhood Emergency Response Team.
It began as some basic classes taught by members of the Fire Department to interested citizens and has expanded into one of the best programs of its kind in the nation that is serving as a model for other municipalities.
The NERT program is organized on a neighborhood basis, is taught by members of the SFFD and is composed of interested volunteers and citizens. To learn more about NERT, and to sign up, visit their home page at http://www.sfgov.org/site/sfnert_index.asp.
Even if you don’t sign up NERT makes available printable documents with important information on such things as creating a family disaster plan and a home/work/car list. Some of the documents are also available in Spanish and Chinese. Find them at http://www.sfgov.org/site/sfnert_index.asp?id=62770.
Once you’ve graduated you might be interested in NERT Graduate Advanced Training. Some of the classes offered include “NERT HAM Communications” and “Disaster Operations 1”. Also NERT Leadership Training” and “Introduction to the Incident Command System”. Look here for more information: http://www.sfgov.org/site/sfnert_index.asp?id=15213.
