The Fire Department received a call at about 6 am this morning for smoke pouring out of an underground vault at Battery and Pine streets in the Financial District.

It was quickly determined that an underground power cable had failed and overheated, causing a lot of smoke, but no actual fire.

The incident was turned over to PG&E and crews are currently repairing the faulty cable. A PG&E spokesman reported that no customers lost power and that the intersection will remain open while the repair is in process.
