Way back when I wrote that the NFL returning to LA was a matter of "when, not if." What did I base this opinion on? Well, nothing really -- other than there being a huge market in place, a willingness from others to spend the dough to make it happen and what appears to be a relentless effort.
The NFL in LA went from general hype to, "Hey, this might actually happen. I think they're serious." Always a hopeful transition.
The news and updates keep pouring out. The latest is that the Governator has signed a bill approving the construction of a 75,000 seat stadium in the City of Industry, which is just outside of LA.
You may recall that city coucil members in the City of Industry approved a proposal for a stadium a few months back. At the time, I said that those in the area could "quietly rejoice" at this news.
Well, some did and some didn't.
Apparently the good people of Walnut, a nearby city, are a little ticked by all this building. Unfortunately for them, the Governator's signing pretty much threw their lawsuit out the window.
The news doesn't stop there, however.
Meet 69-year-old billionaire and stadium-builder Ed Roski. Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim wrote a brief feature on 'The Man with a Plan' in the magazine's most recent issue. Here is a more in-depth rundown of Roski the businessman. Like all heavy-hitters, Roski isn't without controversy, but appears capable of getting the job done (2.5 billion net worth should do the trick!).
In addition to Wertheim's column, Peter King handicaps which teams are in the relocation running. Because, don't forget, all this news is frivolous without a team.
So maybe hold off on the "Welcome back, Rams!" poster-making party.
