The challenge finding Slater's 50/05 in a back corner of Big Lot's Ctr in Anaheim Hills is worth it.

If you’re in the mood for something unique yet casual, check out Slater’s 50/50. That’s what we were looking to find for lunch yesterday. Sherry, a business woman we met a couple weeks ago, highly recommended Slater’s. We were pleased that we went.
Welcoming Contemporary Restaurant for Gourmet Burgers and More
We knew immediately that this is an upscale restaurant-bar because a live person, Lauren Inge, greeted us from her hostess station. She set the tone for a enjoyable dining experience because of how upbeat and enthusiastically she welcomed us and how she described some of the selections, like the Chorizo Burger, a newer item that’s not on the menu. It’s a beef burger infused with chorizo and served with jalapeños, pico de Gallo, cheddar cheese, and cilantro-lime-sour cream sauce. Lauren said she had one the other day and was still thinking about it. I’ll tell you what, based on that strong an endorsement I almost ordered one despite not being able to tolerate cheddar cheese or sour cream – and I have very norte americano taste buds so I suspected it would be too hot for my palate as well.

Enjoy Sweet Potato Fries with Pumpkin Dipping Sauce to Whet Your Appetite

On the other hand, when Kaitlin came over we did follow Lauren’s recommendation to try the sweet potato fries with the house pumpkin dipping sauce – secret recipe. Kaitlin graciously explained the menu including telling us how to design our own burger by using the checklist to create our personal orders. While we mulled over our choices, Kaitlin brought our sweet potato fries. Dorothy and I delighted in the pumpkin dipping sauce - the recipe is a house secret.  Dorothy never even tried the ranch dipping sauce, normally one of her favorites. I was impressed that Kaitlin came back several times to answer questions before we were ready to order. I appreciated her warm, friendly patience with our questions and with how long it took us to decide.

Slater’s has fresh squeezed lemonade! I had a sip of Dorothy’s as I have to watch my sugar. She, however, thoroughly enjoyed it and the refills. Kaitlin and her assistant get brownie points for keeping my fresh brewed iced tea refilled too. We enjoyed exceptional service.

We Finally Narrowed Our Selections Down and Ordered Our Custom Designed Burgers

While Slater’s 50/50 offered some incredible combinations (see link to their menu), we decided to “Design It!” our way. The turkey tempted me, but I wanted to have the 50/50 burger that Sherry told us about. It’s half hamburger and half bacon. (To see our selections, look at the slideshow where the caption will detail what each of us ordered.)

Attractively Served, Our Delicious, Thick Burgers Rose to Meet Our High Expectations

One of the things we both commented on was that our burgers were really crispy on the outside, the way we like them, and pink in the center. There were two surprises. First, the bacon was ground up and mixed with the hamburger. I know, I should have understood this because I was told it as well as the very name implies it. Nevertheless, my past experience is that the hamburger has the bacon on top or wrapped. The flavor was excellent though unique as the bacon was a subtle blend with the hamburger. The other was that despite the bacon component, the burger tasted lean to me. It lacked the juicy, greasy flavor I expected because of the bacon. Though I passed on the ramekin of cold pasta salad, Dorothy assured me it was very good with just a bit of a tang.

Ambiance, Plating, and Attention to Detail Boost a Meal to a Dining Experience

It's in the attention to detail that a n exceptional restaurant rises above the pack. For instance, ambiance contributes much to my enjoyment of a meal so I was delighted to find Slater’s was attractive, open, spacious with high ceilings, and comfortable with booth benches along two walls. For those who enjoy entertainment while eating or drinking, they provide thirteen flat panel TVs mounted around the restaurant and bar. I also like a meal that is attractively plated (how the food looks when served) as opposed to just slopped on the plate. The cooks showed they cared about the food they prepared by making our burgers look a cut above. The only critique was minor. Our table wasn't set up when we arrived. However, the assistant corrected that quickly when he delivered the appetizers.
We Look Forward to Returning to Try Other Combinations
This is a place to go for socializing. Likewise, Scott has recognized that people today desire control over their lives by offering the Design Your Own Burger checklist order form. For those who don’t want to bother, he has nine Slater’s Signatures including the Peanut Butter and Jellousy, which he claims is wonderful. Apparently I’m not as adventurous a diner as I once thought. I love creative, new restaurant concepts which are well executed, like Slater's 50/50. If you decide to visit too, I’m confident that you’ll find it exceptional in every way.

(Watch for my interview this coming week with the young owner, Scott Slater.) If you too like interesting dining experiences, look at my reviews of Fire + Ice  and The Cheesecke Factory.

As you can see from my pictures or from their website, Slater’s 50/50 offers beer and wine. In fact, Scott takes pride in having the largest selection of beers – over 50 – in Orange County. See my slideshow for Happy Hour Specials, Monday though Friday, 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
