Finally, the one-ounce 2009 American Gold Buffalo coins are available from dealers.

Delayed due to skyrocketing demand for all its gold and silver coins, the United States Mint is bringing the popular Buffalo coins to market with barely two months left in the year. Due to the shortage of blanks, only the one-ounce coin will be issued this year. In past years the Buffalo was issued in fractional denominations of less than an ounce.

These are the un-circulated bullion coins, not the proof version that the Mint has scheduled for release next Friday the 29th. (See http://www.usmint.gov/)

First issued in 2006, the Buffalo coins have been very popular with collectors and investors alike. With a purity of .9999% gold content, it is the only 24-karat gold coin minted in the United States. They were issued as a response to coins of similar purity: the Canadian Maple Leaf and the Austrian Philharmonic.

Many believe the American Gold Eagle is the purest gold coin produced in the United States. In fact, the Eagle is 22-karat gold, not 24-karat like the Buffalo. The American Gold Eagle contains one ounce of gold with an additional alloy of silver and copper for hardening, making the Eagle’s total weight 1.0909 ounces.

The American Gold Buffalo coin is based on the famous 1913 Buffalo nickel designed by James Earle Fraser. The coin’s obverse (front) shows the profile of a Native American, and the reverse side shows a buffalo, or bison.

The American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin will go on sale next Friday, October 29th. (See http://www.usmint.gov/catalog)
