As a Broncos fan, your fantasy draft can be especially tricky, thanks to coach Shanahan’s persistent and infuriating inability to pick a running back and stick with him. Nevertheless, there are a few Broncos that could help carry you to victory this year.
1. Jay Cutler – He really started to hit his stride during the second half of 2007, throwing 11 TDs in his last 7 games, he’s got a terrific weapon in Brandon Marshall, and now that he’s in control of his diabetes, he’ll have the strength and energy to last all four quarters.
2. Brandon Marshall – “Baby T.O.” had a monster year in 2007 – 102 receptions, 1,325 yards and 7 TDs. And he’s looked great in the preseason… for whatever that’s worth. BUT, his fantasy value takes a bit of a hit thanks to an offseason boxing match with a TV that left him in stitches, as well as a two (maybe three) game suspension for violating the NFL’s conduct policy.
3. Tony Scheffler – He’s not going to produce like Gates, Winslow or Witten, but he’ll be a great later-round pick for anyone who misses out on the top tier. He’s a favorite target of Cutler’s and he’ll probably take good advantage of Marshall’s suspension.
4. Selvin Young – This is a tricky pick because of what I mentioned earlier… Shanahan is just so darn mysterious. Young may be the starter in week one, but there’s no guarantee Shanahan won’t fall in love with another RB later in the year. Young does have a lot of upside, though. In 2007 he averaged 5.2 yards per carry and added 231 receiving yards, so he’s got the talent to merit a serious look in the later rounds of the draft.
