A Colorado sports nut for life, Erin Hickey takes his obsession to a new level with the best seat in the house, covering local hoops, hockey, the Rox and everything in-between scene.
The Melo trade rumors have calmed down, but there’s still plenty of off-season activity in Nuggetsland. For now, the team is focusing its attention on its “big three” free agents – Eddie Najera, Anthony Carter and J.R. Smith. The Nuggets would love to keep all three of them – Najera, for his relentless hustle and scrappy defensive play; Smith for his firepower off the bench; and Carter for his… willingness to take a minimum contract deal.
Najera says he wants to stay in Denver, but he’s recently been courted by the Oklahoma City team formerly known as the Seattle Supersonics. Najera happens to live in Oklahoma City, so this could be an attractive option for him.
The Nuggets will fight hard to retain Smith, but the Spurs reportedly have eyes for J.R., as well. And they could make things interesting by offering a contract near the league’s mid-level exception of $5.585 million – an amount that the Nuggets would have to think long and hard about matching.
Financially, Anthony Carter makes sense for the Nuggets. No doubt, there are plenty of better, younger point guards out there (Carter is 33 years old), but none that are available for minimum contracts. At the very least, a deal for Carter would buy the Nuggs some time, as they desperately search for a better option.
