Nuggets lose Najera, have big shoes to fill

Yesterday, the Nuggets lost Eduardo Najera to the New Jersey Nets. He was just too expensive for the salary-capped Nuggs. So while the rest of the West is getting better, the Nuggets appear to be completely hamstrung by the big-dollar contracts of Camby, K-Mart, AI and Melo.

If the Nuggs had to make a salary cap sacrifice, Najera should have been the last player to go. He might not have been the most naturally talented basketball player in the league. But his hustle, his defensive grit and his off-the-bench spark were invaluable to a team like the Nuggets, who seem to frequently forget just how important those things are. They won’t have any trouble covering his 6 points a game, but how are they going to replace his work ethic? Did anyone on the team give more effort-per-minute than Eddie?

Sure, the Nuggets can pat themselves on the back for finagling a bargain-basement deal with point guard Anthony Carter (he said this week that he’d accept a minimum contract, $1.26 million, in 2008-09). But he’s not going to be able to fill Najera’s shoes by himself. Either the rest of the squad (especially the bench) will pick up the slack next season, or the Nuggets will find themselves struggling to even make the playoffs in a ruthless Western Conference hoping to leave them in the dust.

Where to find the best Olympics coverage online

POSTED August 14, 8:57 AM

Aside from the pointless one-hour tape delays and the even more pointless Mary Carillo and Cris Collinsworth, I've really enjoyed the Beijing Olympics so far. However, I'm still struggling to find accurate TV listing information and good coverage... Read More

The two worst words in sports: tape delay

I was going to rant about how disrespected I feel by NBC giving us Mountain Staters a tape-delayed Olympic Games. But the folks at Yahoo! Sports are already all over it, and it’s probably better than anything I can come up with this early in the... Read More
