Life After Euro 2008....

The Euro 2008 soccer tournament has come and gone… and I’m already feeling the symptoms of withdrawal. Oh, what a glorious month of soccer it was. Spain (my team from the start) won its first Euro championship in 44 years, and the comeback kids – Turkey – made it all the way to the semifinals, despite only holding a lead for 9 of their 400+ minutes played. But Turkey wasn’t the only team with a flair for the dramatic. Of the 77 goals scored during the tournament, 18 hit the back of the net within the final 5 minutes!

Sadly, it’s over now, and like many soccer fans, I'm struggling to fill the void. Sure, there’s a decent MLS game on TV every once in a while, and I still have the Rapids to root for, but it’s just not the same.

To take my mind off the pain, I’ve started daydreaming about the future of soccer here in the states. Maybe a few more of the older European stars will decide to play out their careers in the MLS next year. And maybe fans will flock to the games and MLS owners will have the cash with which to lure even more Euro stars. And if more big name players make the trip to the States, why couldn’t a few of them land in Colorado?

So while I’m dreaming, here are the top 3 Euro stars I’d like to see in a Rapids uniform, and the reasons why they’d want to play in Colorado:

3. Ronaldo – Sure, the Brazilian star may have put on a little extra weight over the past few years, but he still managed to score 7 goals in 14 appearances in his last full season in Italy’s Serie A league (2007). Why Colorado? What better place to get back into shape than Denver, Colorado – the United States’ 4th fittest city, according to Men’s Fitness Magazine.

2. Thierry Henry – Twice nominated as the FIFA world player of the year, Henry can still score with the best of them. Why Colorado? He loves the NBA and is a huge Allen Iverson fan.

1. Zinedine Zidane – His age may be catching up to him (turned 36 this month), but Zidane was arguably the best player in the 2006 World Cup, so he still has something left in the tank. Why Colorado? He could practice his head-butts with the true masters of the art: Colorado’s Bighorn Sheep.
