Dear Joe Sakic...

Dear Joe Sakic,

Please don’t go yet. The game still needs you. The Avs still need you. The fans still need you.

Yes, you’re old… but not Chris Chelios old. And you obviously still have some tricks left in the bag. After all, you scored 40 points in 44 games last year and 100 points the year before. Not too shabby. You know who reached 100 points last year? Only Ovechkin (112) and Malkin (106).

But stats don’t matter. Wins matter. And I know you’d like another shot at the cup. It might not seem that important right now, but you’d regret it if you weren’t fighting alongside the rest of the Avs for Lord Stanley’s cup come springtime next year.

Besides, what would you do if you weren’t playing hockey next season? Let’s take a look at some of your options….
1. Play lots of golf – this may seem like a safe way to ease into retirement, but I assure you, it’s extremely dangerous. Do you know what happens to people on the golf course? They have heart attacks and tear ACLs.
2. Go fishing – unless you were hunting barracudas and piranhas with your bare hands, I think you’d find fishing a tad too serene and boring after 19 years in the NHL.
3. Go sailing – if you want to face gangs of hungry sharks, why not stay in the NHL?
4. Take a job as a hockey analyst – this sounds like a pretty sweet gig, actually. But have you seen how those guys dress?
Another season of hockey sounds pretty sweet when compared with the alternative, eh? I know you’ll thank me when you step onto the ice for training camp this September.

Your biggest fan,
Erin
