There are many seemingly contradictory rules of fan-dom at play in this year's NBA finals. Lakers or Celtics.... As Nuggets fans, how are we supposed to know who to support? It would certainly be reasonable to remain ambivalent and simply hope for a competitive seven-game series. But there are so many good reasons to root for (or against) either team.
For example, do we back the team that demolished us in the first round because, if we're going to lose, it's best to lose to the eventual champ?
Or do we root against them because they demolished us in the first round?
Do we pull for the team in our same conference? We’re more familiar with their style of play, their roster, their coaches… and we probably hold onto a slight bias that our home conference is obviously the better one.
Or do we hope for a Lakers failure because we still can’t stand Kobe Bryant?
Do we root for the Celtics because we can’t help but get caught up in the excitement of their incredible turn-around from a dismal 24-58 record last year?
Or do we focus all of our negative energy to derail the Celtics and avenge the Rockies’ embarrassing loss to the Red Sox in the World Series? And to silence all those spoiled, annoying Boston fans who have seen their teams reach three major championships in the past eight months?
