A Colorado sports nut for life, Erin Hickey takes his obsession to a new level with the best seat in the house, covering local hoops, hockey, the Rox and everything in-between scene.
Ah yes, playoff hockey. A wonderful time of year full of miraculous goals and powerful facial hair. And while I’m preparing myself for the crippling disappointment of a 9th place finish for the Nuggets, I’m optimistic that the Avs will make up for it with a glorious Stanley Cup finals run. The team is really playing some great hockey right now, and if you’re still struggling to embrace the game after the 04-05 lockout (and I’ll admit that it took me till this season to really start following the Avs again), one intense game of playoff hockey is just what you need.
The thing I’m most excited about this playoff season is the return of Peter Forsberg. 10 months off the ice, and all he does in his return is rack up 14 points in nine games and 12 in the last five games of the season. His presence has obviously sparked something in the rest of the team, because they’ve gone 13-5-1 since signing the greatest player in the world. Plus, the man knows how to grow a dominant playoff beard.
Of course, the rest of the team hasn’t looked too shabby either. Sakic is Sakic. Foote is Foote. Hejduk, Stastny and Liles are in top form. And Theodore is tending the net like we knew he could.
It sure does feel great to have the Avs back in the playoffs where they belong, and Peter Forsberg back in Denver, where he belongs. Enjoy the games!
Here’s the first round schedule, in case you were wondering: Game 1. Wed, Apr 9 – at Minnesota, 7:00pm (Altitude TV) Game 2. Fri, Apr 11 – at Minnesota, 7:00pm (Altitude TV) Game 3.
