I’ve been thinking about the Cutler/Marshall story lately, and I have to say, I like what Cutler did. He showed some much-needed leadership and initiative, making an honest assessment of a situation that had been a distraction to the team and its fans.
Cutler wasn’t telling Marshall to somehow figure out a way to operate as a high-performance football robot and never have an accident; he was simply making the observation that Marshall’s off-the-field antics seem to keep him in the headlines more than his on-the-field performances… which is unfortunate (though, sadly, not uncommon) for a young receiver with such great promise. He was trying to open Marshall’s eyes to the fact that the entire team would benefit if he would re-focus and commit to football.
Hopefully, it won't backfire and ignite a locker room-dividing clash between two young stars. I don’t think it will. I think both guys respect each other and the team enough to view this in a positive light and use it as motivation, rather than a source of discouragement and division. I’m eagerly awaiting a response from Marshall, and I’m hoping it will help prove to Cutler and all of us that he does possess the maturity needed to succeed in the NFL. Marshall doesn’t even need to apologize. If he just comes out and says, “I’ve put it behind me and I’m focusing 100% of my efforts on rehabbing my arm and preparing for the season”, I’m sure Cutler would be ecstatic.
