Great night for Denver sports last night.... The Rockies outlasted the Padres in a 22-inning marathon. The game took 6 hours and 16 minutes to finish, which means I could have run an actual marathon and been home before the final out (assuming my lungs, and/or heart, and/or knees didn't explode in the process). Most importantly, Jeff Francis pitched a great game and looked like he's finally starting to feel comfortable on the mound. The Rockies' bats, on the other hand, weren't so hot. It took 73 at bats to produce 2 runs. Of course, the Padres could only manage 1 run in 74 at bats... so everything's relative, I guess. Here are some fun facts about the game, courtesy of the Big League Stew.
The Avs didn't need quite as many hours or opportunities to put away the Wild last night. In fact, they were able to find the net 3 times with just 17 shots, and they did it all within 60 minutes of regulation play! But the real hero last night was Jose Theodore. He was almost perfect, stopping 38 of 40 shots. And he singlehandedly kept the team in the game in the face of unrelenting pressure from the Wild. You could tell how exasperated the Minnesota players felt after another game in which they just couldn't crack the Theodore wall. The Avs clearly have the momentum now, and I think the series will end on Saturday night in Denver.
