I came across an interesting top-10 list yesterday; Forbes’ list of America's 10 Most Miserable Sports Cities. Denver grabbed the 7th spot… coincidentally, the same number worn by Colorado sports hero, Jovan Kirovski, of the Rapids. Oh, and also John Elway.
I was surprised, and maybe even slightly offended by the list. How dare they label us as a miserable sports city! Do we really deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Atlanta, Seattle and Buffalo? No. The Forbes sports happiness equation is obviously incomplete.
I think if you asked them, most folks around here would say they’re generally happy and proud to be Denver sports fans. Surely some have become frustrated by the Nuggets’ inconsistencies and inability to survive a first round playoff series, or the Broncos general mediocrity over the past two few years, but I doubt very many would say they were miserable. I don’t think fans become miserable until they lose hope. And that definitely hasn’t happened. At least we begin every season with a decent shot at seeing a couple of our teams in the playoffs. That’s more than a lot of cities can say. The Avs and Broncos are usually in contention for a playoff spot. The Nuggets emerged from a decade-long funk in 2003 and have made the playoffs four years in a row (please join me in praying for a fifth straight postseason appearance). And after last season’s incredible finish and subsequent World Series trip, the Rockies have brought a renewed sense of excitement to Blake St. So, if anything, I’d say Denver sports fans are more hopeful than ever. (Of course, if the Nuggets end up missing the playoffs, I will come back and strike all positive and optimistic remarks from this post.)
