An encouraging debut for Rox rookie Reynolds

Big league debuts are always fun to watch. You can't help but root for a newcomer as he takes his first nervous steps onto the field. Pitching debuts are, of course, the most intriguing. Who doesn't enjoy placing a friendly wager on whether he makes it past the first inning?

Things were looking quite promising for Rockies rookie Greg Reynolds this afternoon as he took on the last place San Diego Padres. Then came the sixth inning. And the Padres (who average a league-worst 3.3 runs a game) suddenly found their bats. Scott Hairston and Khalil Greene smacked a couple of home runs, and Reynolds was pulled after 5 2/3 innings.

Still, Reynolds looked confident on the mound and showed some pretty good stuff. At the very least, he's a solid upgrade from Mark Redman (who's allowed 19 runs in his last three starts). I think Reynolds and the Rockies should feel pretty good about his first start... but they're going to need a lot more out of him - and Francis and Jimenez - if they want to keep sight of the playoffs.
