Two Buffs land gigs in NBA summer leagues

Former University of Colorado basketball stars Marcus Hall and Richard Roby are headed for the NBA… at least for the summer. Hall signed with New York, where he’ll be one of 15 Knicks players attempting to wow the coaches and scouts in the NBA’s Las Vegas summer league. Roby, CU’s all-time leading scorer, inked a short-term deal with New Jersey to play in the NBA’s Rocky Mountain summer league in Salt Lake City. Roby’s signed through July 25th, after which he’ll become a free agent.

Here’s what you should know about Hall and Roby (courtesy cubuffs.com):

Marcus Hall

  • 26th player to score 1,000 career points; fourth all-time in assists (423)
  • Tied for third in career games played (120)
  • Finished career ranked in the top-10 in six categories
  • Career-best 128 assists during the season; 100 assists in each of his last three years
  • Second in team scoring 14.0 ppg. senior year; netted double figures 25 of 32 times
  • Tied a Big 12 best with eight steals in one game
  • Set school record for minutes played in a season (1202); also played eight, 40+ minute games
  • Finished senior season among Big 12 Conference leaders: fourth overall in Big 12 assists (4.0), sixth in steals (1.8), seventh in assist-turnover ratio (1.8), eighth in FG percentage (.476), 10th in scoring (14.0)

Richard Roby

  • CU’s all-time leading scorer (2,001 points); fourth all-time in Big 12 Conference history
  • Ranks in the Top-5 in 15 categories, one or two in seven of them
  • All-Big 12 first and third team; conference all-freshman team
  • Career scoring average 16.8 ppg., 5.5 rpg., 2.2 apg., 1.5 spg.
  • Three of four years averaged over 17 ppg.
  • 11 career double-doubles
  • Scored double-figures 105 times in 119 games
  • Seven career 30+ point games; 40 games with 20 or more points

We all know that CU is no powerhouse basketball program – even if they do reside in the Big 12 conference. So it’s good to see two alumni taking small, yet encouraging steps toward life in the NBA. Here’s to hoping both guys find a home in the league come October. Hey, I hear the Nuggets are looking for some economical players next year….

An encouraging debut for Rox rookie Reynolds

May 11, 6:18 PM
Big league debuts are always fun to watch. You can't help but root for a newcomer as he takes his first nervous steps onto the field. Pitching debuts are, of course, the most intriguing. Who doesn't enjoy placing a friendly wager on whether... Read More
