Peter the Great and Superjoe - who will stay and who will go?

If you visit the hockey pages of both ESPN.com and Yahoo! Sports this morning, you’ll see, front and center, a photo of Peter Forsberg and Joe Sakic, along with the headlines “The Big Ifs” and “Time of Change”. Scary thoughts for an Avs fan…. Is it really possible that neither of these hockey super heroes will be playing next season?

I’d guess that Forsberg, who’s still struggling with a familiar foot injury, is unlikely to play professional hockey again. According to Rick Sadowski of the Rocky, the best case scenario involves months of rehab that would keep Foppa off the ice until Christmas.

Sakic claims he’s still undecided about retirement, but my gut says he’ll be back on the ice. As the season gets closer and closer, it’ll be harder and harder for him to resist the urge to suit up. Just ask Brett Favre.
